Linen vs linen-textured cotton bedsheets: what's the difference?

Linen has a look people love: relaxed, natural, a little rumpled, never too perfect. But "linen" and "linen-textured" are not the same thing. One describes the fibre; the other describes the look. Here is a simple guide to help you choose.

What is linen?

Linen is woven from the fibres of the flax plant. It is one of the oldest fabrics in the world. Linen has a crisp, slightly dry hand when new, a natural lustre, and a characteristic texture. Pure linen bedding is usually more expensive than cotton bedding, and it is often sold by fabric weight rather than by thread count.

What is linen-textured cotton?

Linen-textured cotton is 100% cotton that is woven to look like linen. The most common way to do this is with slub yarn: cotton yarn that is spun with small, deliberate thicker and thinner sections. When the yarn is woven, these "slubs" show up as fine, irregular lines across the fabric. That gives the matte, natural, slightly uneven surface that people associate with linen.

So a linen-textured cotton sheet gives you the look of linen while the fibre is entirely cotton.

Linen vs linen-textured cotton at a glance

Pure linen Linen-textured (slub) cotton
Fibre Flax 100% cotton
Look Natural texture, soft lustre Natural slub texture, matte
Feel when new Crisp, can feel slightly rough Soft, familiar cotton feel
Creasing Creases easily Creases; the relaxed look suits it
Thread count Rarely quoted Can be quoted (e.g. 300 TC)
Price Usually higher Usually lower than pure linen

Which one should you choose?

Choose pure linen if you want the flax fibre itself and you enjoy the crisp hand of linen as it is.

Choose linen-textured cotton if you love the relaxed linen look but want the soft feel of cotton from day one, at a more accessible price.

Is "linen-textured" the same as "linen blend"?

No. A linen blend (or "cotton-linen") contains some flax fibre mixed with cotton. A linen-textured cotton sheet contains no linen at all; only the look is borrowed. Always check the fibre content on the label. A good brand will state it clearly.

Are the slubs a defect?

No. The small, thicker threads you can see and feel are part of the yarn, by design. They are what create the texture, and no two lengths of fabric are exactly alike.

How to care for linen-textured cotton

Follow the care label on your product. Wash gently, avoid very high heat, and smooth the sheet while it is still slightly damp if you like a neater finish. Or leave it relaxed: that lived-in look is the point.
